Chris Riddell,Paul Stewart: Hugo Pepper

Hugo Pepper

Description

This is a brilliantly inventive, fabulously illustrated addition to the "Far-Flung Adventure" series from the award-winning, bestselling author and illustrator team, Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell. Set in the same world as Fergus Crane and Corby Flood's stories, this is the tale of a small boy, Hugo Pepper, and his amazing exploits. Raised in the Frozen North by reindeer herders, his parents eaten by polar bears when he was just a baby, Hugo discovers that the sled they arrived in has a very special compass - one that can be set to 'Home'. And so Hugo arrives in Firefly Square - to discover a group of very special friends, and a dastardly enemy...With three-toed snowmen, a secret buried treasure and a host of fabulous stories, this is a fantastic new tale in this series.

Lidia's Commonsense Guide to Italian Cooking is a collection of 150 delectable recipes, told with commonsense cooking wisdom, that teaches us how create simple, seasonal Italian dishes with grace, confidence and love. The author of The Dead Beat and This Book is Overdue! turns her piercing eye and charming wit to the real-life avatars of Indiana Jones-the archaeologists who sort through the muck and mire of swamps, ancient landfills, volcanic islands, and other dirty places to reclaim history for us all. Pompeii, Machu Picchu, the Valley of the Kings, the Parthenon-the names of these legendary archaeological sites conjure up romance and mystery. The news is full of archaeology: treasures found (British king under parking lot) and treasures lost (looters, bulldozers, natural disaster, and war). Archaeological research tantalizes us with possibilities (are modern humans really part Neandertal?). Where are the archaeologists behind these stories? What kind of work do they actually do, and why does it matter? Marilyn Johnson's Lives in Ruins is an absorbing and entertaining look at the lives of contemporary archaeologists as they sweat under the sun for clues to the puzzle of our past. Hugo Pepper download book Johnson digs and drinks alongside archaeologists, chases them through the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and even Machu Picchu, and excavates their lives.

Fania Lewando: The Vilna Vegetarian Cookbook: Garden-Fresh Recipes Rediscovered and Adapted for Today's Kitchen

The Vilna Vegetarian Cookbook: Garden-Fresh Recipes Rediscovered and Adapted for Today's Kitchen

Description

Beautifully translated for a new generation of devotees of delicious and healthy eating: a groundbreaking, mouthwatering vegetarian cookbook originally published in Yiddish in pre World War II Vilna and miraculously rediscovered more than half a century later. In 1938, Fania Lewando, the proprietor of a popular vegetarian restaurant in Vilna, Lithuania, published a Yiddish vegetarian cookbook unlike any that had come before. Its 400 recipes ranged from traditional Jewish dishes (kugel, blintzes, fruit compote, borscht) to vegetarian versions of Jewish holiday staples (cholent, kishke, schnitzel) to appetizers, soups, main courses, and desserts that introduced vegetables and fruits that had not traditionally been part of the repertoire of the Jewish homemaker (Chickpea Cutlets, Jerusalem Artichoke Soup; Leek Frittata; Apple Charlotte with Whole Wheat Breadcrumbs). Also included were impassioned essays by Lewando and by a physician about the benefits of vegetarianism. Accompanying the recipes were lush full-color drawings of vegetables and fruit that had originally appeared on bilingual (Yiddish and English) seed packets. Lewando's cookbook was sold throughout Europe. Lewando and her husband died during World War II, and it was assumed that all but a few family-owned and archival copies of her cookbook vanished along with most of European Jewry. But in 1995 a couple attending an antiquarian book fair in England came upon a copy of Lewando's cookbook. Recognizing its historical value, they purchased it and donated it to the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in New York City, the premier repository for books and artifacts relating to prewar European Jewry. Enchanted by the book's contents and by its backstory, YIVO commissioned a translation of the book that will make Lewando's charming, delicious, and practical recipes available to an audience beyond the wildest dreams of the visionary woman who created them. With a foreword by Joan Nathan.Full-color illustrations throughout. Translated from the Yiddish by Eve Jochnowitz."

The Complete Writings of St. Francis Assisi is the only book on the market to include the original writings of St. Francis, his own work, The Little Flowers of St. Francis and a extensive biography of the life and achievements of St. Francis. St. Francis was an extraordinary writer and poet whose writings are sure to move the young and seasoned writer on topics such as life, love, the environment, animals all while keeping a close walk with your creator. The beauty and mystery of the Sonoran Desert provide the vibrant backdrop for Robbi McCoy's (Waltzing at Midnight, Songs Without Words) passionate story of two women forced to question everything they thought they knew about The Vilna Vegetarian Cookbook: Garden-Fresh Recipes Rediscovered and Adapted for Today's Kitchen download PDF themselves before they can risk their fiery hearts on the biggest gamble of all. Who else but Joseph Wambaugh could write "a joy, a hoot, a riot of a book" thatis also acclaimed as "one of this season's best crime novels"? That's how "The New York Times Book Review" and "Time," respectively, describedhis last novel, "Finnegan's Week." Nobody writes a faster, funnier, moresatisfying tale of cops and criminals, the high life and lowlifes thanWambaugh--and "Floaters" is his sharpest yet.Mick Fortney and his partner Leeds manage to cruise above the standard policestress-pools of coffee and Pepto-Bismol--they're water cops in the "Club HarborUnit, " manning a patrol boat on San Diego's Mission Bay. A typically roughday's detail consists of scoping out body-sculpted beauties on pleasure craft, rescuing boating bozos who've run aground, jeering at lifeguards, and haulingin the occasional floater who comes to the surface. But now their days are anything but typical, because the America's Cupinternational sailing regattas have come to town and suddenly San Diego isswarming with yacht crazies of every nationality, the cuppies who want to lovethem, and the looky-look tourists, racing spies, scam artists, and hookers whoall want their piece of the action. It's the outstanding body and jauntysmile--full of mischief, full of hell--of one cuppie, a particularly fieryredhead named Blaze, that gets Leeds and Fortney's attention. First Leedsdrowns in frustratingly unrequited boozy love from afar. Then, with herincreasingly odd behavior, Blaze tweaks every one of their cop instincts, alerting them that something's not quite right on the waterfront.Indeed, Blaze will soon lead Detective Anne Zorn and Mick Fortney along abizarre criminal trail that would be hilarious if itdidn't wind up just asnasty as it gets, with a pair of murders right on the eve of the biggestsailing race of all.Filled with all of Joseph Wambaugh's trademark skills--laugh-out-loud writing, crackling dialogue, outrageous excitement, and, of course, plenty of raunchyveteran cops who leap off the page-- "Floaters" is Wambaugh at the very topof his form.Praise for Joseph Wambaugh's "Finnegan's Week": "A master storyteller...Wambaugh dazzles." -- Digby Diehl, "Playboy" "Funny, exciting, and ultimately touching." -- "Chicago Tribune" "One of the best novels Joseph Wambaugh has written...Wambaugh is in rareform." -- "San Francisco Chronicle" "Wambaugh is at the top of his form here...raunchy and often hilarious."-- "Publishers Weekly" (starred review)

Robert Crais: The Promise

The Promise

Description

Elvis Cole and Joe Pike are joined by "Suspect" heroes LAPD K-9 Officer Scott James and his German shepherd, Maggie, in the new heart-stopping thriller from #1 "New York Times"-bestselling author Robert Crais. Loyalty, commitment, and the fight for justice have always driven Elvis Cole and Joe Pike. If they make a promise, they "keep" it. Even if it could get them killed. When Elvis Cole is secretly hired to find a grief-stricken mother, he's led to an ordinary house on a rainy night in Echo Park. Only the house isn't ordinary, and the people hiding inside are a desperate fugitive and a murderous criminal with his own dangerous secrets. As helicopters swirl overhead, Scott and Maggie track the fugitive to this same house, coming face-to-face with Mr. Rollins, a killer who leaves behind a brutally murdered body and enough explosives to destroy the neighborhood. Scott is now the only person who can identify him, but Mr. Rollins has a rule: Never leave a witness alive. For all of them, the night is only beginning. Sworn to secrecy by his client, Elvis finds himself targeted by the police even as Mr. Rollins targets Maggie and Scott. As Mr. Rollins closes in for the kill, Elvis and Joe join forces with Scott and Maggie to follow a trail of lies where no one is who they claim -- and the very woman they promised to save might get them all killed."

You Can, You Will: 8 Undeniable Qualities of a Winner

Description

Joel Osteen focuses on the eight irrefutable traits and attributes of highly successful people. These personal qualities are tested through the ages and all types of circumstances. These practical principles guide the lives of champions: Create bold visions - Dare to dream big dreams. Run your own race - Focus on your unique course and goals. Think positively - Control your thoughts and attitudes. Expect Good things to happen-Anticipate great opportunities. Stay Passionate - Light the fire within and approach life with enthusiasm. Commit to excellence - Do your best and maintain high standards. Keep growing - Deal with your weaknesses and continually improve. Serve Others - Invest yourself in others.

"Common as Air" offers a stirring defence of our cultural commons, that vast store of art and ideas we have inherited from the past and continue to enrich in the present. Suspicious of the current idea that all creative work is "intellectual property", Lewis Hyde turns You Can, You Will: 8 Undeniable Qualities of a Winner free epub to America's Founding Fathers - men such as Adams, Madison, and Jefferson - in search of other ways to imagine the fruits of human wit and imagination. What he discovers is a rich tradition in which knowledge was assumed a commonwealth, not a private preserve. For the founders, democratic self-governance itself demanded open and easy access to ideas. So did the growth of creative communities such as that of eighteenth-century science. And so did the flourishing of public persons, the very actors whose "civic virtue" brought the nation into being. In this lively, carefully argued, and well-documented book, Hyde brings the past to bear on present matters, shedding fresh light on everything from the Human Genome Project to Bob Dylan's musical roots. "Common as Air" allows us to stand on the shoulders of America's revolutionary giants and thus to see beyond today's narrow debates over cultural ownership.

Knit the City: A Whodunnknit Set in London

Description

Since 2009, Deadly Knitshade and her covert group of dyed-in-the-wool knitting ninjas have been transforming the grey streets of London in a riot of woolly colour - one stitch at a time. No corner is safe from their yarnstorms - sublime crafty marriages of street art and knitting - which have baffled policemen, delighted tourists, and brought a touch of much-needed homespun colour into the everyday lives of Londoners. Knit the City's handmade mischief transformed a forlorn ballerina outside the Royal Opera House, cosied a Parliament Square phone box and conjured a 13-ft spider's web, replete with doomed insects and fairies, in a tunnel beneath Waterloo station. Their daring arty feats will ensure that you never see knitting - or London - the same way again.

A counting sticker book based on Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar Are you hungry? The very hungry caterpillar certainly is! You can help him count how much he eats using reusable GIANT stickers as he munches his way through the week! Expert Heads Up No Limit Hold'em: v. 2: Strategies for Multiple Streets

Description

Expert Heads Up No Limit Hold'Em, Volume 1, was quickly identified by poker commentators as a ground-breaking work. By paring the game down to its bare essentials, Volume 1 provided a framework for analysing any poker situation and finding the most profitable response to any opponent strategy. In engaging these ideas, you understood important concepts such as equilibrium and balanced play. Volume 1 applied this methodology to preflop-only and river situations, and clearly explained a number of useful analytical techniques and deep poker concepts along the way. What is more -- it showed why these ideas are crucial for implementing expert-level thought processes at the table. Volume 2 picks up where Volume 1 left off, this time concentrating on early street play. It develops tools for planning strategies to be executed over multiple streets and provides careful analysis of situations that arise when smart players' strategies interact. This will prepare you to execute pseudo-optimal and exploitative strategies in the myriad situations which can arise on the turn, flop, and pre-flop streets. Expert Heads Up No Limit Hold'Em, Volume 2, also features detailed discussions of the reads-gathering process and the principles behind winrate-maximising play. This book will give you the understanding and help you to develop the HUNL skills necessary to face whatever an opponent can throw at you.

The Blue Mountain

Description

The Blue Mountain is the first novel by one of Israel's most important and acclaimed contemporary writers and as with all his writing is a virtuoso example of Shalev's skill as a storyteller. Published to outstanding reviews all over the world, its publication in Britain re-affirms his reputation as a major international writer. Set in a small rural village prior to the creation of the State of Israel, this funny and hugely imaginative book paints an extraordinary picture of a small community of Ukrainian immigrants as they succeed in pioneering a new life in a new land over three generations. The Blue Mountain transcends its time and place by touching on issues of universal relevance whilst never failing to entertain and engage the reader. As with Four Meals, the writing is lyrical and of exceptional quality and illustrates why Shalev has been steadily winning over an ever-increasing number of fans worldwide.
